Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Royal AM 3-0 in the DSTV Premiership on Saturday night. Head coach Rulani Mokwena believes that their opponents were physically strong on the day.

Neo Maema, Cassius Mailula and Surprise Ralani were all on the scoresheet as The Brazilians claimed yet another win.

“First let’s congratulate Mamelodi Sundowns,” Mokwena told Mpho Maboi of SuperSport TV.

“The football club in its entirety, from senior management, [to] the senior team, [to] the coaches and of course, huge plaudits for this incredible group of football players and then congratulates to Cassius [Mailula], as you said, for Man of the Match. Well deserved and I think you guys had a very difficult job to do because on both sides of the pitch, for maybe the first 70 minutes or so, there were a lot of very good performances on the pitch.

“But I thought our group was better. Our players showed grit and fight. We played an away match like we were supposed to.” The newly appointed head coach added.

“They were very aggressive. I said to the boys, ‘don’t let them bully you,’ because they know we are very good on the ball, very technical.

“We are patient to try to open things up. But in the 50/50’s they were extremely aggressive and sometimes we allowed that aggression to force us into rushed passes, instead of being press-resistant and a little bit stronger.

“So, in the second half we were a little bit better. We controlled the possession a bit more.

“We controlled both boxes a little bit more and dominated the pitch a little bit more. We were not afraid of the physicality, but a good fight and hats off once more to Mamelodi Sundowns. Particularly the players.” Mokwena spoke.
