Publication Daily Maverick yesterday reported that South African tourism with enter into a lucrative partnership with the Premier League team. Lindiwe Sisulu has rubbished the report.

The report claimed that Sisulu and SA Tourism would sponsor Spurs over several years, with the club benefitting about R1 billion throughout the sponsorship deal.

“Documents obtained by Daily Maverick show that the South African government, through its marketing agency SA Tourism, is preparing to ink a deal worth R910,997,814.75 to sponsor one of the English Premier League’s best-known teams, Tottenham Hotspur.” The article stated.

Sisulu released a media statement rubbishing these claims.

“This article is riddled with inaccuracies and untruths aimed at tarnishing Minister Sisulu’s image. There is no doubt the report seeks to drive a political agenda rather than to inform he public truthfully in line with journalism ethos.

“The reporter falsely claims that Minister Sisulu is forcing SA Tourism to push the deal through before she is moved from Tourism portfolio.

“This is a blatant lie. This reported deal, is purely an SAT board matter on which Minister Sisulu does not interfere with its decisions.

“Proposals get received by SAT, and are processed by a project team, then are sent through to the executive committee before being presented to the SAT board.” The statement goes on to read.
