‘Toast to the amazing season’ – Mashego

You could see it yourself that the Cape Town City left-back Terrence Mashego was enjoying his second season with the Cape Town-based club to the fullest.

Playing 27 games out of 30 of the DStv Premiership makes it even more safe to say he is regular in that position. He has also earned the recognition of the Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos who doesn’t seem to forget his name when he calls the squad.

“Toast to the amazing season. We’ve set a record to reach the top 4 and I can safely say we achieved that. We wanted to win MTN 8 but we lost in the final. To me it felt like a win only because of the attitude, I’m proud. We’ve grown as a young team and I believe there’s more coming next season. I believe,” Mashego wrote on Instagram.

Mashego scored one goal and provided three assists in the league matches this season. This is perhaps the campaign that his name has been heard on many’s lips, mostly with compliments. With City losing MTN Cup final to Sundowns on penalties in September, the 23-year-old left-back scored one goal and provided an assist. While in Nedbank Cup, he appeared only once.

Mashego began his career at Mthatha Bucks in 2016 before he secured a move to TS Galaxy in 2018. One will recall his fine performances in the Nedbank Cup 2019 when they went on to beat Kaizer Chiefs in the final. That’s when he caught eyes with his bravery and potential to become something immense in the left-back position.

City signed him in 2020 and he fitted in straight away. Mashego made his debut for Bafana this month in the 3-1 win over Ethiopia in Bahir Dar. Mashego has been called to the national team four times.
