PICS! Throwback When Denis Onyango Was Still A Young Aspiring Footballer

Choosing football as a career in some African countries can be a difficult decision as there’s no guarantee that one will get opportunities. Why? Most countries in the continent aren’t developed economically, some don’t behold football as work as it doesn’t pay much.

Being exported to countries where leagues are financially stable is always the first objective in achieving one’s goal as a professional footballer. Except for playing in Europe, perhaps coming to South Africa was a dream for Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

Premier Soccer League (PSL) is one of the best leagues if not the best in Africa. For Onyango to be granted an opportunity at SuperSport United in 2006, it was just going to get better and better. Growing up in Uganda, he went all out in showing off his talent. See pictures below

He came at the right time at Sundowns in 2011 when they were about to start dominating SA football. Being part of the history-making team for such a long time surely makes him proud when he looks back where it all began.

RULANI TALKS ABOUT ONYANGO’S ACHIEVEMENTS AND BACKGROUND

“It’s very difficult to speak about Denis without being emotional because of what he has done not only for Sundowns but what he has done is incredible for these young kids that are in Uganda. You’ve got to go to Uganda to understand the environment, not just from a political sense but the socio-economic background that he comes from,” Rulani Mokwena told journalists.

“And to get someone to be the best goalkeeper on the African continent and to win that award from humble beginnings to achieve not only with Sundowns, but with Bidvest Wits and SuperSport, and that type of story is one that many footballers would be happy to write.” He added.
