Steve Barker Believes They Deserved Win Over Mamelodi Sundowns! Stellies got the better of The Brazilians over the weekend.

Stellenbosch FC defeated Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in their Nedbank Cup quarterfinal on Saturday night. Head coach Steve Barker insists that no one can deny them that victory.

The visitors took a first half lead after an Aubrey Modiba struck hit the post and came off Lee Langeveldt. The goalkeeper was credited with the own goal.

However, mistakes from Teboho Mokoena and Mothobi Mvala each saw Iqraam Rayners equalize and give Stellies the lead in the second half.

“I told the players before the game that if you want to beat teams like Sundowns, you want to win tournaments or cups like today, we need everyone to stand up and be counted.” Barker told SuperSport TV.

“Be leaders, be warriors, fight for the badge, for the club, for our supporters, for Oshwin [Andries], for their families and their loved ones. For me, every single one was man of the match.

“I mean the effort the guys put in, the structure, the defensive work, the covering, the pressing, creating opportunities. I think no one can deny us this victory today.

“1-0 down at halftime, we had to come out, we had to dig deep. Even in the first half we were causing some pressure moments.

“In the second half I think it was a continued effort to put pressure at the right time, because they’re a team if you go too early and they play behind you and break lines, you become pressurized. So, I think we just done that very well where we waited for the right moments and sometimes you need a little bit of luck to go your way to win games like this.

“But I think the pressure, a little bit of luck and most of all the heart that these players put in today was just magnificent.”
