10 Things You Didn’t Know About Eric Mathoho

Mulomowandau Eric Matoho is one of the best central defenders in South Africa. Hailing from Thohoyandou, the 26 year old made waves when he was playing for Bloemfontein Celtic. The lanky 26 year old defender has now signed a new contract extension with Kaizer Chiefs. Below are ten things you did not know about Matoho.

1. Mathoho was discovered by now Bafana Bafana assistant coach Owen Da Gama at Celtic trials.
2. On his debut game for Bloemfontein Celtic against Sundowns on the 3 of February 2010, Mathoho was the man of the match.
3. He scored his first goal in the PSL against Supersport United who were hammered 5-0 by Bloemfontein Celtic.
4. Mathoho put on great performances in his first six months as a professional and was linked to Maccabi Haifa and went for trials at FC Twente but the €1 million deal never materialized.
5. Matoho signed for Chiefs in 2012. He won the 2012/13 league title and the Nedbank Cup in his first season with Amakhosi.
6. Mathoho’s luck of going oversas has been unfortunate with deals for Juventus and Bayern Munich all collapsing.
7. Mathoho played every minute of South Africa’s successful AFCON qualifying campaign in 2014 under Ephraim Shakes Mashaba to help them qualify for the first time since 2008.
8. Mathoho conducts all of his interviews after man of the match awards in Vhenda. It is his home language and he is proud of it and states it is what gave him solid background to be a great player.
9. In 2015 Mathoho had baby mama drama with his long time girlfriend, Hangwani Muthavhatshindi, who claimed Mathoho impregnated her but Mathoho wanted a DNA test to prove he is the father of the baby boy.
10. In 2016 Mathoho was hijacked and later on his Range Rover was recovered by police and his personal belongings were never recovered.
