Aubrey Modiba Eyes Special Reunion Against Former Coach in CAF Champions League

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Aubrey Modiba says facing former coach Rulani Mokwena in the upcoming CAF Champions League clash against MC Alger will be a unique occasion, but professionalism remains the priority. Speaking after Sundowns’ group stage victory over Saint Eloi Lupopo at Loftus Stadium, Modiba reflected on the importance of starting the continental campaign with a home win and looked ahead to the trip to Algeria.
Modiba praised his team’s response after conceding an early goal to the DRC side. He highlighted Sundowns’ resilience and determination to recover in the second half. “I was happy with the response in the second half. The guys dug deep, showed we wanted to win, scored the goal, and made sure we didn’t concede again. Conceding is never a nice feeling, so I’m glad we wrapped it up in the second half,” Modiba said.
The match also featured Marcelo Allende’s goal celebration, mimicking injured striker Peter Shalulile’s signature style, which Modiba said reflected the squad’s unity. “It shows we support each other. Even when someone is going through a difficult time, we lift each other up. Peter is not here, but he’s a key member of the team and has scored so many goals. It was a nice celebration for the guys,” he added.
Looking ahead to the Algeria fixture, Modiba acknowledged the emotional significance of facing Mokwena while stressing Sundowns’ professional obligations. “It’s very important to win the first game at home because away games are never easy. Difficult conditions, pitches, but we don’t dwell on that. Winning at home gives us an edge for other games,” Modiba said.
Regarding the reunion, Modiba added: “We had a very good relationship with our coach, so it’ll be nice to see him. But right now we’re professionals. We have to do what we have to do and make sure we win. We know how he plays, and it’s going to be tough in Algeria, North Africa is never easy. But it’ll be a nice feeling to see him again.”
MC Alger began their group stage campaign with a defeat against Sudanese side Al Hilal and will look to bounce back when they host Mamelodi Sundowns.
