10 Things You Don’t Know About Lebogang Mokoena

As known as ‘Cheeseboy” Lebogang Mokoena made waves in South African football while playing for Orlando Pirates in 2003 when he was only 17 years old. He is quick on his feet and defenders used to see nothing but dust when he ran past them. He is still playing and has matured in the game as fine wine. These are 10 things you do not know about Cheeseboy.

  1. Mokoena, started playing football at the age of eight, playing football in the streets of his birthplace, Diepkloof in Soweto.
  2. While growing up, Mokoena excelled in other sports athletics. He had a keen interest in sprinting and broke records in the 100, 200 and 800 meter events at his Primary school. Mokoena began playing football for his local team, Diepkloof Hellenic.
  3. He made his PSL debut in the colors of Pirates coming on as a substitute in the 2–2 draw away to Santos on 1 November 2003, going on to play twenty-four matches in that season, starting eleven and coming off the bench thirteen times; he netted five goals.
  4. While at Pirates, in the 2004/5 season Mokoena’s efforts were rewarded when he won the club’s Most Improved Player of the Year award.
  5. In 2006 Lebogang was promoted to Orlando Pirates senior team where he spent three seasons, before moving to Pretoria side Mamelodi Sundowns. He left Sundowns in 2016 to join Ajax Cape Town where he is currently playing.
  6. Mokoena, is one of a few young players in the country who has the record of having represented his nation at all levels starting with the Under-17 (14 caps), U-20 (2 caps) and he was a regular figure, and one of the top goal scorers, in the U-23 squad.
  7. In 2015 Mokoena got married to Masentle in Vosloorus and fellow Pirates teams mates as Joseph Makhanya was on the guest list.
  8. Mokoena, made his international debut in a 2–1 win against Mexico during the CONCACAF Gold Cup, in the United States on 8 July 2005.
  9. Mokoena, is re-united with Mark Mayambela at Ajax Cape Town.
  10. Mokeona, played a Pirates with the late Gift Leremi and Bennedict Vilakazi at Orlando Pirates.
