The Italians were trailing the overall tie 1-0 after their first leg defeat in Netherlands last week Thursday. Leonardo Spinazzola gave Roma the lead in the second half.

Feyenoord equalised the match and retook the overall lead when Igor Paixao scored soon after. Paolo Dybala levelled the tie on the 89th minute, to send the match into extra-time.

Stephan El-Shaarawy made it 3-1 on the night and 3-2 in the tie to give them the lead on aggregate for the first time. Lorenzo Pellegrini sealed the tie when he scored the fourth goal for Roma.

“The lads managed the game well against an excellent team – but we were the better team.” Head coach Jose Mourinho told UEFA after the match.

“I try to give joy to the fans and to make the boys grow. I’m sure the fans would have gone home happy for the team regardless of the result.

“We have limits, but this team is a family.” He added.

“I respect my team for playing with courage in this atmosphere.” Arne Slot, Feyenoord head coach, elaborated.

“In the end, it wasn’t enough because [Paolo] Dybala scored a fantastic goal. Dybala and [Tammy] Abraham were too much for us.

“Roma showed a lot of character by coming back like that. I thought it was quite amazing that we were still going in the final phase of extra time.

“I also had no idea that we were finished. Every Feyenoord player can be very proud of how we presented ourselves in Europe.

“We played very well on the ball, but that is not enough. It’s about winning.” He added.
