Here’s How Much SABC Will Pay Per Year To Broadcast PSL Matches! Ever wondered how TV channels pay to broadcast local soccer matches? The amount will explain why Premiership matches were not broadcast on the public broadcaster in the opening weeks of the season.

Soccer fans without pay TV were relieved after sports minister Nathi Mthethwa intervened to have domestic football back on SABC television and radio a few weeks ago. So how much did SABC pay to have the rights to broadcast PSL matches? The SABC bought the rights to show Absa Premiership matches for R72m a season over five years.

SABC was reportedly happy with the R72m-per-season deal it struck with SuperSport for the broadcast rights after declining a R280m-per-year proposal stating it was not commercially viable. In the more expensive deal, the SABC would have made annual revenue of just R47m.

The deal will see the SABC broadcasting 46 premiership matches during the season including the popular Soweto derby games between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates and cup semifinals and finals, as well as the National First Division relegation/play-offs games.
