Farewell, Lorenzo Sanz
On March 21, 2020, Lorenzo Sanz, who was president of Real Madrid from 1995 to 2000, passed away. During his presidency, the club continued to build on its history and legend. It was with him that, 32 years later, the club won its seventh European Cup in Amsterdam in 1998.
With Lorenzo Sanz as president of Real Madrid, the club won seven titles: two European Cups plus an Intercontinental Cup, a League, a Spanish Super Cup, a Basketball League and a European Basketball Cup Winners’ Cup.
After his death, the expressions of affection and condolences were quick to follow. The president Florentino Pérez spoke of his character: “He brought the madridistas the so longed for European Cup, after 32 years of long wait. During his presidency we were great again in European competition. A very important madridista has left us and he has dedicated a good part of his life to what was his passion together with his family: Real Madrid“.
The reactions of madridismo came one after the other. Players, coaches and club legends mourned the loss through social networks. His family was grateful for the messages of support. His son Lorenzo Sanz said: “It’s a hard moment for the family and for madridismo. My father’s passion for Real Madrid was beyond normal“. Meanwhile, Fernando Sanz added: “I am grateful to my father for this recognition. He has been a humble person who has dedicated his life to Real Madrid“.
