History of Laureus Sports Awards and Soccer! The Laureus Sports Awards are the most prestigious sports awards in the entire globe.

They transcend all sports as athletes from all fields compete against one another. The Awards inauguration was in 2000.

Former South African President Nelson Mandela, who was to become Patron of Laureus, gave a famous speech that night.

“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope, where once there was only despair.” – Mandela said.
