Cameroon defeated heavyweights Brazil in the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Friday. Despite the impressive victory, they have headed home from the competition.

This is a historic win for Cameroon, as they have become the first African team to beat Brazil in a FIFA World Cup match. This record will only serve as a silver lining though as they have been knocked out in the group stages.

Striker Vincent Abubaker scored the only goal in the dying stages of the game. Victory meant that they finish the group on 4 points, behind Switzerland and Brazil.

“I’m so proud of my players,” Cameroon coach Rigobert Song told the FIFA media.

“This is such a historic result. My players deserve all the congratulations.

“Of course, we have regrets. We wanted to go through.

“But we also need to look on the positive side. This is a huge result for Cameroon, for Africa.

“I have been trying to instil a team spirit, a lion’s spirit, and I think you could see this. We go home, but we go home having beaten Brazil and shown that we are a match for anyone.” He added.

“It’s a shame the other result didn’t go our way, but we can go home with our heads held high. It had been years since Cameroon achieved a victory in the World Cup,” goal scorer Vincent Abubaker spoke.

“It was a great win and I’m sure this result will set us up well for the future. We have good, young players and now we must wait for 2026.” He concluded.
