Leaving Out Khanyisa Mayo Was Tough Decision for Hugo Broos! This is despite the fabulous season he had enjoyed.
Khanyisa Mayo was omitted from the 23-man squad for the next Bafana Bafana camp. Head coach Hugo Broos explained that this was a very difficult decision.
Mayo enjoyed a great season for Cape Town City, where his 12 goals in the DSTV Premiership meant he was the joint top goal scorer alongside Peter Shalulile. This alone was expected to see him be a shoe in for the next camp.
He was in the 33-man preliminary squad, but eventually omitted from the 23-man squad. Broos opted for Percy Tau, Bongokuhle Hlongwane, Mihlali Mayambela, Monnapule Saleng, Cassius Mailula and Zakhele Lepasa in the forward positions.
“You have to make decisions and choices and sometimes the choices are difficult for me.
“Should I take Mayo? Should I take Saleng? Or should I take another striker?”
“Yes, you take a little bit of what can he [do] and what he cannot [do] and what can the other one [do].
“At the end, it was Mayo we didn’t choose. But it has nothing to do with that [he] didn’t show enough in pre-camp.
“His end of the season was very good, he started scoring again with his team.
“But yes, sometimes you really can’t explain why you choose that player or why you don’t choose that player. Again, the choices are starting to be difficult sometimes.
“He deserves to be there, but I can only select 23 players.” He explained.
The forward will hope to make the AFCON squad next January. Leaving Out Khanyisa Mayo Was Tough Decision for Hugo Broos!
