CAF President Patrice Motsepe Pays Tribute to Lucas “Masterpiece” Moripe

The African football community is in mourning following the passing of Lucas “Masterpiece” Moripe, one of South Africa’s greatest football icons. Moripe, 71, passed away at his home in Atteridgeville after battling health complications, including a stroke that left him wheelchair-bound in his later years.

Moripe, a former star for Orlando Pirates and Pretoria Callies, was celebrated as a trailblazer in South African football. His skill, dedication, and impact on the game earned him a special place in the hearts of fans and players alike. In recognition of his immense contributions, the Atteridgeville Super Stadium was renamed the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in 2010.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, joined the chorus of tributes pouring in from South African clubs, sports personalities, and fans. In a heartfelt statement on CAFOnline, Motsepe described Moripe as a legendary figure whose legacy will inspire generations of African footballers.

“The Confédération Africaine de Football (‘CAF’) President Dr Patrice Motsepe is deeply saddened by the passing of South African football icon Lucas ‘Masterpiece’ Moripe,” the statement read.

“‘Masterpiece’ Moripe played for a number of top South African clubs. It was at Pretoria Callies where he made his mark and also at Orlando Pirates.”

Motsepe extended condolences to Moripe’s family, the South African Football Association (SAFA), and the entire South African football fraternity.

Moripe’s death marks the end of an era, but his influence on the sport endures. Tributes from all corners of the country have emphasized his extraordinary talent and the profound respect he commanded on and off the field.
