Percy Tau’s Role at Al Ahly Under Scrutiny After Draw Against National Bank

South African forward Percy Tau’s position at Al Ahly has become a topic of heated debate following the team’s lackluster 0-0 draw against National Bank in the Egyptian Premier League on Sunday. Tau, who was named in Marcel Koller’s starting lineup, was substituted in the 71st minute after an underwhelming performance.

Mounting Criticism

The draw has fueled frustrations among Al Ahly supporters and pundits, with Egyptian media personality Amir Hisham offering scathing criticism of Tau’s contribution during a televised segment. Hisham also questioned the club’s handling of foreign players and the decision to extend Tau’s contract.

“I think the preparation for the current season was bad, although the team won the Egyptian Super Cup and the Tri-Continental Cup,” Hisham said, as reported by BelBalady. “The negatives had to be addressed. Al-Ahly officials must address the mistakes.”

Questions About Commitment

Hisham was particularly harsh on Tau, accusing the 30-year-old of lacking commitment. “Percy Tau sent a message today that he does not want to stay and only wants to get his money,” Hisham remarked.

“The mistake is on the one who suggested activating the additional year clause. His contract must be terminated, and a replacement added. Tau receives large sums of money and has not provided anything noteworthy.”

Broader Foreign Player Criticism

Hisham extended his critique to Al Ahly’s broader strategy regarding foreign players, arguing that high salaries have not translated into significant on-field contributions. “With the exception of Wissam Abu Ali, none of the foreigners are making a technical impact,” he noted.

This scrutiny comes amidst ongoing speculation about Tau’s future at the Club of the Century. The forward, whose contract expires at the end of the season, was linked with a move away during the last transfer window, but no deal materialized.

What’s Next for Percy Tau?

Tau’s struggles at Al Ahly come despite a promising past season, where he contributed significantly to the team’s CAF Champions League victory. However, recent performances have drawn concerns over his ability to maintain consistency at the club.

With his contract set to expire and criticism mounting, Tau may face a pivotal few months to prove his worth or explore opportunities elsewhere. As Al Ahly navigates the challenges of the current season, the future of one of South Africa’s brightest talents remains uncertain.
