Mngqithi Confident Rising Star Khoza Could Feature at 2025 Africa Cup of Nations
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, has expressed his strong belief that one of the club’s rising stars, 20-year-old Khoza, could soon be making waves on the international stage, with a potential spot in South Africa’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
A Standout Performance
Sundowns reclaimed the top spot in the Betway Premiership standings with a dominant 3-0 victory over Sekhukhune United at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday. While much of the attention was on the goals from Iqraam Rayners, Arthur Sales, and an own goal by Sekhukhune’s Tresor Tshibwabwa Yamba, it was young Khoza’s performance that truly impressed Mngqithi.
In his post-match interview, the former Golden Arrows coach singled out Khoza’s development, saying, “I’m very happy with Khoza. I think he’s developing into something big, and I can tell you now, if he continues the way he is, he has a very big chance of going to AFCON with the national team. I have no doubt.”
A Bright Future
Mngqithi’s confidence in Khoza is not without merit. The Bafana Bafana squad for the 2025 AFCON is already taking shape, and coach Hugo Broos has shown a clear willingness to give young players an opportunity. Khoza, who has been quietly progressing under the radar, may soon join the ranks of youthful talent in the national setup.
Khoza’s teammate, Thapelo Maseko, was among the youngest players at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast and was even named one of the best young players on the continent. The likes of Orlando Pirates’ Relebohile Mofokeng have also recently enjoyed consistent call-ups to the national team, proving that youth is being actively embraced at Bafana Bafana.
If Khoza continues on his current trajectory, Mngqithi’s prediction could become a reality. With Sundowns offering a platform for young players to showcase their talent and progress, Khoza is certainly one to watch as South Africa prepares for the next continental competition.
