Ex-Kaizer Chiefs Coach Bold on Amakhosi’s Goalkeeping Situation, Picks Who Should Start

Kaizer Chiefs’ goalkeeper dilemma has continued to perplex fans and pundits alike this season. Despite several changes in goalkeeping personnel, the Soweto giants have struggled to keep clean sheets, with two of their shot-stoppers—Fiacre Ntwari and Brandon Petersen—failing to deliver consistent performances.

Ex-Kaizer Chiefs coach Sergio dos Santos has now weighed in on the ongoing situation, urging the club to give Bruce Bvuma another chance between the posts. Bvuma, who has not featured in any competitive matches this season, is the only senior goalkeeper yet to be tested.

Ntwari’s Struggles and Petersen’s Inconsistency

Ntwari, who began the season as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, has had a challenging run. He has conceded 11 goals in the seven matches he has played, keeping only one clean sheet. His performances, which had initially offered some hope, have not met expectations.

Meanwhile, Petersen, who was recently given the starting role in place of Ntwari, has not done much to solidify his position. The former Ajax Cape Town goalkeeper has conceded five goals in his last three outings, raising concerns about his ability to anchor the team defensively.

Dos Santos Calls for Bvuma’s Return

Speaking to KickOff, Dos Santos expressed his disappointment with both Ntwari and Petersen’s performances. He highlighted that, despite both players having potential, they have failed to provide the stability the club needs at the back.

“Who is Kaizer Chiefs’ best goalkeeper at the moment? That’s a very big question,” said Dos Santos. “At the moment, certainly the Rwandan international [Ntwari] has not produced the goods that we expected from him. He is certainly not the goalkeeper we thought he was going to be, and now Brandon has come in, and he is just not the goalkeeper that we thought he was going to be either.”

Dos Santos, who knows Petersen from his time at Ajax Cape Town, added, “Brandon is not doing it, and the other one is not doing it, so you might as well give Bvuma a chance to come back.”

Bvuma, despite his previous mistakes, had shown promise during his time as Kaizer Chiefs’ regular goalkeeper. According to Dos Santos, he should be given another opportunity, especially considering the underwhelming performances of his counterparts. “Bvuma is being replaced by what we thought was going to be a very good signing, the Rwandan international, and he has not produced the goods,” he continued.

What Does This Mean for Chiefs?

As the team faces TS Galaxy on December 16, the question remains: who will be trusted to guard the goal? With Bvuma yet to play a single match this season, it will be interesting to see if Chiefs opt to give him another chance or stick with Ntwari or Petersen.

Kaizer Chiefs, who have already been scrutinized for their defensive shortcomings, need to find stability at the back if they are to improve their form. Whether Bvuma can rise to the occasion remains to be seen, but after the struggles of Ntwari and Petersen, he may just be the answer Chiefs need.
