Pitso Mosimane and Carlos Queiroz Shortlisted for Zamalek SC Managerial Role

Former Bafana Bafana coaches Pitso Mosimane and Carlos Queiroz have reportedly been named among a five-man shortlist to take over as head coach of Egyptian football giant Zamalek SC.

The Candidates

Zamalek, one of the most successful clubs in Africa, is in urgent need of a new manager following the resignation of Portuguese coach Jose Gomes earlier this week. Gomes, who cited unworkable conditions at the club, stated, “The circumstances necessary to continue bringing titles to our fans are no longer available.” Reports suggest he is set to join Saudi Pro League side Al Fateh.

In response, Zamalek’s decision-makers have convened to review potential candidates for the managerial position. According to Arabic outlet Botolaat, the shortlist includes:

  1. Pitso Mosimane – Currently managing Esteghlal FC in Iran, where he has been in charge for seven matches. Mosimane is no stranger to Egyptian football, having enjoyed a highly successful stint with Zamalek’s arch-rivals Al Ahly, where he won multiple CAF Champions League titles.
  2. Carlos Queiroz – Former Egypt national team coach (2021–2022) who has been without a managerial role since parting ways with Qatar in December 2023.
  3. Hector Cuper – Experienced Argentine coach, known for his time with Egypt’s national team and leading them to the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
  4. Vahid Halilhodzic – Former Morocco coach with extensive African football experience.
  5. Rogerio Micale – Brazilian tactician with a strong youth development background.

Mosimane’s Potential Return to Egypt

Despite being under contract with Esteghlal FC, Mosimane is reportedly under serious consideration for the Zamalek job. His previous success in Egypt, particularly his ability to manage high-pressure environments and deliver trophies, makes him an attractive option for the club.

Queiroz’s Case for the Role

Queiroz, on the other hand, brings a wealth of international experience. Having managed some of the world’s top sides, including Real Madrid and several national teams, his familiarity with Egyptian football from his time with the national team adds to his appeal.

Zamalek’s Challenges

The club’s board is under pressure to make a swift appointment to stabilize the team, which is struggling on and off the field. Zamalek’s rich history and loyal fan base demand immediate success, a challenge that will require a coach capable of handling high expectations and difficult circumstances.

What’s Next?

As Zamalek assesses its options, the next few days will be crucial in deciding who takes the helm. Whether it’s Mosimane, Queiroz, or another contender, the appointment will have significant implications for the club’s season and its ambitions in domestic and continental competitions.

The prospect of Mosimane or Queiroz returning to Egypt brings excitement and intrigue. Both coaches have proven track records and could bring stability and success to a Zamalek side in desperate need of direction. For now, the football world waits to see who will be handed the reins of this North African powerhouse.
