Gil Vicente Interested in SuperSport United Midfielder Manelisi Mazibuko
Portuguese club Gil Vicente has reportedly expressed interest in signing Manelisi Mazibuko, a young midfielder from SuperSport United. The 19-year-old, who signed his first professional contract with the South African outfit in August 2024, could soon follow in the footsteps of compatriot Katlego ‘Yaya’ Sithole, who is currently with the Portuguese side.
Scouted at ‘No Limits Atlas Showcase’
The interest stems from Gil Vicente’s scouting mission at the ‘No Limits Atlas Showcase,’ held in Balfour Park from December 6-8, 2024. The event drew numerous scouts, but Mazibuko’s performance stood out.
According to a trusted source, the Portuguese scouts were impressed by Mazibuko’s talent and believe he is an ideal fit for the club’s playing style.
“The Portuguese scouts were in the country and watched many players, but Manelisi Mazibuko caught their attention. They really want him in Portugal as soon as possible. For now, they don’t need him on trials. The scouts know the type of players the team needs, and Manelisi suits that bill,” revealed the insider.
Path to European Football
Another source close to the situation noted that, like Yaya Sithole’s development at Gil Vicente, Mazibuko might begin his European journey in the Under-18 or Under-21 teams before progressing to the senior squad.
“Since he is still young and hasn’t been exposed to European football, he might start with the Under-18s or Under-21s until he’s ready for the first team. But for them to scout him out of so many players shows they believe in his potential. It’s a great opportunity for his growth,” the source explained.
A Big Step for Mazibuko
Mazibuko’s potential move marks an exciting step in his budding career. At just 19 years old, this opportunity to join a European club highlights the growing recognition of South African talent on the global stage.
If the deal materializes, Mazibuko will join an increasing list of South African players making their mark abroad, paving the way for more young talents to follow.
