Moeneeb Josephs Weighs In on Orlando Pirates’ Predictability After Latest Defeat

Orlando Pirates are facing concerns about their predictability following their second defeat in the Betway Premiership to Cape Town City. The defeat has raised fears that the team’s approach to matches, both domestically and continentally, is becoming too repetitive, making it easier for opponents to plan against them.

The criticism stems from Pirates’ consistent use of the same line-up and style of play. Even after a narrow 1-0 victory over the Buccaneers, interim coach Muhsin Ertugral suggested in a post-match press conference that Pirates’ lack of tactical variety was making it easier for opposing teams to anticipate their moves.

Sticking to the Plan

In their match against Cape Town City, despite trailing, Pirates stuck to their patient combination play. With players like Boitumelo Radiopane and Evidence Makgopa in the squad, there was an opportunity to change things up and use crosses into the box to challenge City’s defense. However, Pirates continued to rely on their possession-based game.

Moeneeb Josephs, the former Pirates goalkeeper, weighed in on the situation, acknowledging the tactical discipline of players like Relebohile Mofokeng, but also emphasizing the importance of adaptability, especially when the team is behind.

“These boys are so tactically drilled and disciplined that they don’t change the game plan,” Josephs said during an appearance on the SoccerBeat YouTube Channel. “They stick to what they know because that’s what gets them the wins. But at times, especially when you’re 1-0 down, you have to change it.”

Josephs noted that with skillful players like Mofokeng and Mohau Nkota, the team often opts to take on defenders rather than play a more direct game. While this can be effective in many situations, Josephs believes that in times of desperation, especially when facing physical teams in the box, Pirates need to be more direct and put the ball into the area, rather than overcomplicating their play.

Need for Variety in Attack

The former goalkeeper acknowledged that the Pirates’ players have been effective in sticking to their strengths, but stressed that they must learn to vary their approach when necessary. “How are you gonna tell Rele to cross the ball when he can say: ‘I can take this ball and create a better opportunity’? But when it’s not working out, put the ball in the box,” Josephs explained.

Pirates’ current approach has often seen them rely on intricate build-up play, but when trailing, a more direct style may be the key to breaking down well-organized defenses. Josephs believes that Pirates should not be afraid to mix things up, especially when they need to chase a game.

As the Soweto giants shift their focus back to international competition, they will look to rebound in the CAF Champions League, where they are set to face CR Belouizdad in a crucial group phase match on Sunday. Pirates will need to strike a balance between their tactical discipline and the flexibility to adjust their approach when necessary to secure a vital win.

Pirates’ fans and pundits alike will be hoping that Josephs’ insights are heeded, and that the team can find the right balance between their tactical discipline and the adaptability required to succeed in both domestic and continental competitions.
