Doctor Khumalo Defends Tashreeq Morris Amid Fan Criticism

Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo has stepped in to defend Tashreeq Morris following backlash from Amakhosi fans regarding the striker’s reported signing from SuperSport United. Khumalo, regarded as one of South Africa’s most respected football voices, has urged Chiefs supporters to give Morris a fair chance, citing the success story of Orlando Pirates midfielder Thalente Mbatha as an example.

What’s Happening?

Morris, who has reportedly completed his medical at Chiefs and signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, has faced heavy criticism from fans unhappy with the move. Despite Morris scoring only two goals in nine appearances for SuperSport United, Khumalo remains optimistic about the striker’s potential.

Speaking on SoccerZone, Khumalo said, “We talk about Morris, he has played nine games and scored two goals for SuperSport United. I would like to believe that we don’t have to be harsh or look at the boy’s journey and think that he might not make it at Chiefs. He might surprise us.”

The Mbatha Parallel

Khumalo drew comparisons to Thalente Mbatha, who moved from SuperSport United to Orlando Pirates after being deemed surplus to requirements. Mbatha has since become an integral part of Jose Riveiro’s setup and has earned a spot in the Bafana Bafana squad under Hugo Broos. Khumalo sees Morris as having the same potential for success if given the right support.

“Look at Mbatha. He came from SuperSport, and now look where he is—he’s in the national team. Morris is an outright striker, he does things simply, and he does not complicate things. But only if they can give him what we call suppliers, he can deliver,” Khumalo explained.

What’s Next for Morris and Chiefs?

Kaizer Chiefs are expected to officially announce Morris as their first signing of the January transfer window. The Naturena-based club is also rumored to be pursuing other talents, including Oswin Appollis, Pyramids’ Fiston Mayele, and Swiss forward Ruben del Campo.

With fans demanding reinforcements for Nasreddine Nabi’s squad, the pressure is on for Morris to prove his worth quickly. Chiefs’ next match is against Free Agents FC in the Nedbank Cup last 32 on January 26, where Morris could make his debut.

Khumalo’s Call for Patience

Doctor Khumalo’s plea is a reminder that many players need time and opportunity to shine. As the January transfer window unfolds, Morris has a chance to not only prove his doubters wrong but also follow in the footsteps of players like Mbatha, who overcame initial skepticism to thrive at a new club.

Whether Morris can rise to the challenge remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: he has the backing of one of South African football’s biggest icons.
