Siyabonga Ngezana Avoids Fine as FC Steaua Bucuresti Prepares for Manchester United Clash
FC Steaua Bucuresti’s management has decided against fining their star defender, Siyabonga Ngezana, following a recent controversy as the team gears up for their crucial UEFA Europa League clash with Manchester United in a week’s time.
The Bafana Bafana international found himself in the spotlight after being omitted from the matchday squad in the team’s 1-1 draw against FCV Farul Constanta. Reports from Romanian outlet Fanatik claim that the Sebokeng-born player refused to travel to Ovidiu for the game, citing injury. However, the club’s medical team later ruled him fit, sparking allegations that he simply chose to remain in Bucharest.
Initially, the club’s president, George Becali, and the executives considered penalizing the 27-year-old with a €10,000 fine (approximately R192,949). However, Becali ultimately chose not to impose the fine, instead offering a light-hearted explanation for the defender’s actions.
“There is no question of Ngezana leaving,” Becali clarified. “I also joked about the fine. He is a good boy. I only drew his attention to scare him and make him be good from now on. He didn’t go to Ovidiu because he has a new Romanian girlfriend and wanted to stay with her in Bucharest.”
Despite the controversy, Ngezana remains an integral part of the squad as they prepare for back-to-back decisive matches. FCSB will first take on Qarabag on Thursday, followed by the much-anticipated clash with Manchester United. Currently sitting in the playoff positions in the UEFA Europa League, victories in these matches could secure their progression to the Round of 16.
Ngezana’s ability to stay focused and deliver strong performances in the coming games will be critical for the Romanian side as they aim to make their mark in Europe. Fans will undoubtedly be hoping that this incident serves as a turning point for the defender to showcase his professionalism and commitment to the team’s ambitions.
