Kenya Still Keen on Benni McCarthy as Coach Despite Delays

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is reportedly eager to secure South African coach Benni McCarthy as the next head coach of the Harambee Stars, but ongoing internal issues are said to be delaying the process.

According to reports, discussions between McCarthy’s representatives and the FKF began in December 2024, following the departure of former coach Engin Firat. Firat stepped down from his role, citing unpaid wages and other challenges as his reasons for leaving. This left the Kenyan national team without a permanent head coach as they prepare for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Internal Issues Hampering Appointment

Although McCarthy is considered the favorite for the role, the FKF’s financial and legal troubles are said to be hindering his official appointment. A recent report by the FKF Transition Ad Hoc Committee revealed that the organization has accumulated a debt of Ksh380 million (approximately R54 million) and is entangled in 21 legal disputes.

These challenges have reportedly forced the FKF to prioritize resolving these issues before finalizing McCarthy’s appointment. Securing adequate funding is seen as critical to creating a stable environment for the South African coach, should he take on the job.

Race Against Time

The urgency of the situation cannot be understated. Kenya faces The Gambia and Gabon in the upcoming March international break, marking the start of their World Cup qualifying campaign. Appointing a coach of McCarthy’s caliber is seen as a strategic move to boost the Harambee Stars’ chances of qualifying for the prestigious tournament.

Why McCarthy?

McCarthy, known for his impressive playing career and growing reputation as a coach, brings a wealth of experience and tactical knowledge. He previously made headlines as an assistant coach at Manchester United, where he was credited with improving the club’s attacking prowess.

Next Steps

It is expected that negotiations between McCarthy’s camp and the FKF will resume soon, but the federation must act swiftly to overcome its challenges. Whether they manage to secure McCarthy before the qualifiers or not, the FKF’s financial woes highlight the broader structural issues facing football administration in Kenya.

The coming weeks will be crucial as the FKF races against time to prepare for the World Cup qualifiers and secure a coach who can lead the Harambee Stars to success on the global stage.
