After just a few appearances and less than a month at Mamelodi Sundowns, Argentine defender Lucas Suarez has impressed the club so much that they are already considering making his loan move permanent at the end of the season.
According to sources close to the club, Sundowns included a purchase option in Suarez’s loan deal from Talleres Cordoba to evaluate his adaptation to South African football before committing to a long-term contract. However, it appears the 29-year-old has already convinced the technical team of his quality.
Club insiders revealed that Sundowns initially wanted to sign Suarez on a permanent deal from the start, but uncertainties surrounding the incoming head coach, Miguel Cardoso, led to the decision to bring him in on loan first. Now, with the current technical team pleased with his performances and professionalism, the club is eager to activate the buy option.
“So for now, they just have to wait for the end of the season to finalize everything because he is still on a loan contract,” a Siya source explained.
Another insider added that Sundowns want to secure Suarez permanently before the FIFA Club World Cup, ensuring his eligibility for the squad in the tournament.
“The club wants to have a very strong team at the Club World Cup, and his loan would be expiring during the tournament. To avoid complications, they are keen to finalize the deal with Talleres before the season ends,” the source stated.
Since arriving in South Africa, Suarez has seamlessly integrated into the team, featuring in key matches, including the recent 1-0 loss to TS Galaxy and the dominant 4-1 victory over Orlando Pirates.
Speaking to Sundowns media, Suarez expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome he has received and his ambitions with the club.
“I come to contribute my grain of sand to be able to achieve everything that can be achieved with this team,” he said.
While the club has yet to make an official announcement, all indications point to Lucas Suarez becoming a permanent member of Masandawana beyond June.
