Philadelphia Union Linked with World Cup Winner Thomas Müller

Bradley Carnell’s Philadelphia Union have emerged as a potential destination for 2014 FIFA World Cup winner Thomas Müller, according to reports from Sport Bild.

Müller’s Future in Question

The Bayern Munich legend is approaching the final months of his contract, which expires in June 2025. At 35 years old, Müller is weighing his options, which include extending his stay in Bavaria, a possible move to Major League Soccer (MLS), or retirement.

While Bayern Munich reportedly wants to keep Müller, he may have to accept a reduced role under new head coach Vincent Kompany. Additionally, a contract extension would likely come with a significant pay cut from his current €17 million (R328 million) annual salary.

Union’s Interest in Müller

Since taking over at Philadelphia Union at the start of 2025, Carnell has already secured four signings, including Uruguayan striker Bruno Damiani and Argentina U-23 international Ian Glavinovich. However, the club appears keen to strengthen further before the MLS transfer window closes on April 23.

Union’s pursuit of Müller aligns with MLS’s growing trend of attracting European stars in the twilight of their careers. If a deal materializes, the German forward would bring vast experience and a winning mentality to Carnell’s squad, as they aim to compete at the highest level in the league.

Decision Expected Soon

Müller’s contract discussions with Bayern are set to resume in March after initial talks in November 2024. Should negotiations stall, a move to the U.S. could become a serious possibility for the decorated forward.

For now, Union fans will wait to see whether Carnell’s side can pull off one of the biggest signings in club history.
