Mamelodi Sundowns to Trim Squad, Goalkeeping Department Targeted

Mamelodi Sundowns are set to downsize their squad ahead of next season, with the goalkeeping department identified as an area for potential cuts.

One of the players expected to leave the club is veteran goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse. However, sources at Chloorkop have indicated that several contractual and financial complications are preventing the club from releasing the former Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper.

Reports suggest that Pieterse’s current contract runs until June 2026, with an additional two-year option. The financial implications of terminating his deal prematurely have made the club hesitant to let him go.

“There could have been considerations before to release him, but the club had to look at the financial and contractual consequences involved in paying him out. His current contract only ends in June 2026, and he has a two-year option after that. The club is considering all these factors and the money involved. Apparently, he is on a big salary as well, and if the club releases him, they would have to pay him a lot. So that’s why they are not thinking of releasing him at the moment,” a source revealed to the Siya crew.

Aside from the financial aspect, Pieterse’s experience also plays a crucial role in Sundowns’ decision-making process. With Rowen Williams and Denis Onyango being the club’s primary goalkeepers, Pieterse remains one of the more seasoned shot-stoppers in the squad.

“Remember, Sundowns play the most games compared to most teams in the PSL, and they need all the experience they can get. As much as it’s true that the club wants to cut down the goalkeeping department, they are considering Reyaad’s experience. That’s why they may opt to keep him and allow him to see out his contract,” an insider explained.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper joined Sundowns from SuperSport United in 2018 but has made only 12 league appearances for the club since his arrival. He has not featured in any matches this season, raising questions about his future at Chloorkop.

While Sundowns remain keen on streamlining their squad, the decision regarding Pieterse’s future will ultimately depend on financial feasibility and squad dynamics as they prepare for the next campaign.
