Jose Riveiro Breaks Silence on Monnapule Saleng’s Absence at Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has opened up about the ongoing Monnapule Saleng situation, acknowledging the club’s difficult position while remaining focused on the players available.
The Buccaneers’ hopes of closing the gap on Betway Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns suffered a setback after they were held to a goalless draw by a 10-man Stellenbosch side on Tuesday night. As has been the case in several matches this season, Pirates lacked a cutting edge in the final third, with many questioning whether Saleng’s absence has contributed to their attacking struggles.
Riveiro Addresses Saleng’s Ongoing Absence
Saleng, one of Pirates’ most influential attackers, has been out of action since early December due to a legal matter, according to his representatives. Speaking after the stalemate at Athlone Stadium, Riveiro admitted the situation is far from ideal but emphasized that the club must adapt.
“No one would like to be in this situation when we started the season, but it is what it is,” the Spanish tactician told the media in his post-match press conference. “As you know, it is not my role to speak much about that issue. I just wish the best for both sides in this case.”
Despite acknowledging Saleng’s importance, Riveiro reiterated that his focus remains on the players who are currently available.
“Whatever I say, it’s going to be a big headline, right? But we are focused on the players that we have, that’s it,” he added.
Confidence in Squad Depth
Riveiro dismissed suggestions that Pirates are heavily reliant on Saleng, insisting that the team boasts enough quality to compete at the highest level.
“Luckily, we have a lot of talent in the team. We have players who are hungry and want to use their opportunities when presented to them. There are players in every position capable of doing the job,” he said.
With a crucial league clash against Mamelodi Sundowns looming on Sunday at FNB Stadium (15:30), the Pirates boss stressed the need to focus on the immediate task rather than dwell on missing players.
“We live for the moment. The future for us is to get ready for a big match this weekend. There’s no time to think so much about who is there and who is not,” he concluded.
Pirates’ Challenge Ahead
With Saleng’s return date still uncertain, Pirates must find a way to be more clinical in attack if they are to stand any chance of closing the gap on Sundowns. The upcoming fixture against the reigning champions presents a massive test for Riveiro’s men as they look to reignite their title ambitions.
