Thamsanqa Tibe Reveals the Match That Launched His Career

In this edition of Secret to Success, retired winger Thamsanqa “Gusheshe” Tibe opens up about the pivotal match that propelled him into professional football.
Tibe recalls how a standout performance against Kaizer Chiefs—and specifically former left-back Bevan Fransman—put him on the radar of top clubs.
A Breakthrough Against Kaizer Chiefs
“I was playing for a Castle League team, Bilikha All Stars from Giyani. We qualified for the Absa Cup last 32 and were drawn against Kaizer Chiefs. I had an outstanding performance against Bevan Fransman that day,” Tibe told KickOff.
“More than anything else, I believe it was my talent and hard work that propelled me to success. I was at my peak, around 17 or 18 years old, during that Chiefs game, which took place in Giyani. I truly excelled in that match.”
Catching the Attention of Top Clubs
Tibe explained how his relentless attacking play against Fransman impressed scouts and club executives who were watching Chiefs.
“Fransman was tasked with marking me, but I managed to draw him out of position. I constantly attacked him, which caught the attention of scouts and club bosses.
“I played as a right winger that day, and our game plan was to exploit my pace and skill to continuously challenge Fransman.”
Offers and the Move to Black Leopards
His eye-catching display led to interest from Black Leopards, Dynamos, and AmaZulu.
“Both Black Leopards and Dynamos noticed me and expressed interest. There was also an offer from AmaZulu, but the move couldn’t materialize,” he added.
“Ultimately, Black Leopards won the race to sign me, but I only joined them at the end of the season. And that’s how I made it to the top.”
Tibe’s story is a reminder that one match can change a player’s career, proving that talent and the right opportunity can open doors to success.
