Hleza Mofedi Backs Orlando Pirates as CAF Champions League Favorites

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Hleza Mofedi has boldly declared that the Buccaneers are the leading contenders to lift the CAF Champions League trophy this season. According to Mofedi, Pirates’ performances have been more convincing than any of the other quarter-finalists, including domestic rivals Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Soweto giants secured a crucial 1-0 away victory against MC Alger in the first leg of their quarter-final clash, while Sundowns also managed a 1-0 win over Esperance at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. Despite the close scoreline, Mofedi believes Pirates’ display in Algeria was a strong statement of intent.

Speaking to KickOff, Mofedi admitted he had initial concerns about the team’s performance but was ultimately impressed with their resilience and second-half improvement.

“I was very nervous at the start of the game; they were pressuring us, and Pirates couldn’t even make three passes,” Mofedi said. “The only scoring chance I remember Pirates missing was one by Evidence Makgopa, but even that wasn’t a clear-cut chance.”

The former midfielder acknowledged that MC Alger dominated the first half, registering 21 shots compared to Pirates’ four, but praised the Buccaneers for their tactical discipline and ability to grow into the game.

“I watched MC Alger closely yesterday, and I can say that the first half belonged to them. However, their substitutions failed to change the game in their favor. Pirates only started playing well in the second half, so I don’t believe Alger can beat us at home.”

Mofedi was particularly impressed with Pirates’ goalkeeper, Sipho Mbokazi, who played a pivotal role in keeping the team ahead.

“Mbokazi played like he’s been in the game for years—cool, calm, and collected. Coach José Riveiro had a perfect plan against Alger. The entire team impressed yesterday; we are going to win this cup. I can’t believe we are on the path to this season’s final.”

With the second leg set to take place in South Africa, Mofedi remains confident that Pirates will not only progress but go all the way to lift the prestigious continental title.

“When I look at the other remaining teams, I can confidently say that we will reach the final and win the cup. We shouldn’t change the way we played yesterday; Pirates’ performance in the Champions League has been more convincing than that of Sundowns.”

Pirates will now look to capitalize on their home advantage and book their place in the semi-finals as they continue their pursuit of CAF Champions League glory.
