Kaizer Chiefs Coach Nabi Explains Msimango Absence After Chippa United Stalemate

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has opened up about the absence of dependable defender Given Msimango during the club’s 0-0 draw with Chippa United in their Betway Premiership clash over the weekend.

The Soweto giants were hoping to secure maximum points at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday to boost their hopes of finishing in the Top Eight, but they were held to a frustrating draw that added more uncertainty to their ambitions.

One of the notable changes in the lineup was the absence of Msimango, who has featured consistently in recent games, especially with Rushwin Dortley sidelined due to injury. His place was taken by Zitha Kwinika, who was making only his second appearance of the season — a move that raised eyebrows among fans and pundits.

Speaking after the match on SuperSport TV, Coach Nabi addressed the decision to leave Msimango out, revealing that the 27-year-old had been playing through pain in recent weeks.

“So, with Given, this week, we are trying to manage him to get more rest. He could have played in this game, but he is not okay,” Nabi said. “For that reason, we had to make the change in his position.”

In a further blow to the squad, Chiefs lost fullback Dillan Solomons early in the match due to injury, forcing Njabulo Blom to step in. Despite the disruptions, Nabi praised his makeshift backline for stepping up in difficult circumstances.

“I’d like to congratulate and thank the players like Zitha, (Edmilson) Dove, and Blom in defence after we lost many defenders to injuries,” he noted. “I think in the next week, we will have some players back. We’ve been unlucky with the injuries, but I think we have a good group.”

The Glamour Boys will now shift their focus to their upcoming fixture against Marumo Gallants at FNB Stadium. With key players expected to return from injury, Nabi will be hopeful of fielding a stronger and more cohesive unit as Chiefs aim to finish the season on a high note.
