Lucas Ribeiro’s Goal Drought: Cardoso Explains Star’s Struggles at Sundowns

Lucas Ribeiro has been a standout figure for Mamelodi Sundowns since his arrival at the start of the 2023-24 season, playing a key role in the team’s attacking prowess. Known for his ability to either score or create chances, the South American has consistently contributed in the final third. However, a recent dip in form has sparked concern among fans and pundits alike.
Ribeiro has now gone six matches across all competitions without registering a goal or an assist—a rare spell for a player who has been so instrumental in Sundowns’ success. His last assist came during the 2-0 win over AmaZulu on March 11, while his most recent goal was in the 1-1 draw with Golden Arrows on March 5.
With the Brazilians heading into a crucial second leg against Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League semi-finals, the timing of Ribeiro’s slump has raised eyebrows. But head coach Miguel Cardoso has moved to explain the attacker’s struggles.
“I totally understand the question and I think it’s important to comment,” Cardoso told the media. “After Lucas made the goal in the matches against Pirates and Chiefs, all the teams started focusing more on him. They’ve been closing him down with two or three players, making his job much harder.”
Cardoso went on to highlight the tactical implications of this increased attention. “When two or three players are marking him, there are spaces opening up elsewhere on the pitch. The team must understand and take advantage of that. And Lucas himself must realise that under heavy pressure, he needs to release the ball quickly and then reposition himself to exploit the space.”
Despite the recent goal drought, Cardoso’s comments reflect confidence in Ribeiro’s ability to adapt and bounce back. The upcoming clash against Al Ahly presents the perfect opportunity for him to rediscover his rhythm and help Sundowns push through to the CAF Champions League final.
With so much at stake, all eyes will be on Ribeiro to see if he can end his dry spell and deliver when it matters most.
