Chippa United Line Up West African Goalkeeper as Stanley Nwabali’s Exit Looms

Chippa United have begun preparations for life after Stanley Nwabali, with the club identifying a goalkeeper from West Africa as a potential replacement ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Nwabali, who has been a key figure for the Chilli Boys since joining in 2022, is set to leave the club at the end of next month. The Nigerian international has enjoyed a stellar rise in recent seasons, drawing attention from local giants like Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, as well as clubs abroad.

With his departure now imminent, Chippa are reportedly close to finalising a move for a new shot-stopper to bolster their goalkeeping department. According to a club insider, the Eastern Cape outfit has shortlisted several candidates across the continent, with one name standing out — Simon Omossola.

Omossola, currently plying his trade with Saint-Eloi Lupopo in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is also the second-choice goalkeeper for the Cameroon national team behind Manchester United’s Andre Onana. His international pedigree and club experience make him a strong contender to fill the void left by Nwabali.

“Chippa United have shortlisted a few goalkeepers, including Simon Omossola, who is currently playing in Congo. He has been highly recommended to the club,” a source close to the club revealed.
“There are other names of goalkeepers in Africa that have been mentioned, but Omossola seems to be a frontrunner.”

The source further revealed that the club has already taken steps to facilitate the move by assisting Omossola in securing a South African visa — a clear sign of intent from Chippa United.

The Gqeberha-based club is currently placed 11th in the Betway Premiership standings with 31 points and could drop further depending on the outcome of Golden Arrows’ clash with SuperSport United. With 28 goals conceded this season, Chippa are eager to shore up their defence and improve consistency at the back.

Beyond the goalkeeping department, changes are also expected on the technical bench. Coach Thabo September, who has been in charge on an interim basis, is expected to make way for a new head coach, with the club likely to make an official announcement in the coming weeks.

As the off-season approaches, Chippa United’s reshuffling points to a new era at the club — one that begins with replacing a fan favourite and securing long-term stability in both the dugout and between the posts.
