Zamalek Yet to Decide on Pitso Mosimane Amid Off-Season Turmoil

Pitso Mosimane’s name has surfaced once again in Egyptian football circles, with the former Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns mentor believed to have been offered to Zamalek SC by his representatives. However, despite the proposal, the Cairo-based giants are yet to respond definitively as they face a chaotic off-season marked by internal upheaval and key player exits.

According to a source close to Zamalek’s decision-making structure, there is awareness of Mosimane’s availability, but no concrete steps have been taken by the club to secure his services. Speaking to Soccer Laduma, the insider confirmed that while Mosimane’s name has been put forward, Zamalek’s silence signals hesitation.

“We heard in the last couple of days that agents of Pitso Mosimane have suggested his name for Zamalek, but there has been no response from the club yet in terms of making a decision,” said the source.

Zamalek, fresh off lifting the Egypt Cup, are currently navigating through a critical phase. Their recent triumph has been overshadowed by the departure of star attacker Ahmed Sayed “Zizo” to bitter rivals Al Ahly — a move that has rocked the fanbase and shaken the club’s off-season strategy.

“The loss of their star player Zizo to Al Ahly is having a major impact on the club,” the insider explained. “Even though they’re celebrating the Egypt Cup, that transfer has been a massive setback.”

The coaching situation remains in limbo as Zamalek traditionally prefer European managers, a factor that could influence whether Mosimane is seriously considered.

“Zamalek usually prefer a European coach, so we have to see if they make an exception,” the source continued. “The way Zamalek operate is different. They tend to secure player signings first and then appoint a coach to work with that group. This is quite the opposite of what happens in most top clubs.”

This unconventional approach may delay any formal move for Mosimane, whose experience in Egypt and broader African football is well-established. With a CAF Champions League title, multiple league titles, and a strong reputation as a tactician, Mosimane would bring immediate credibility and structure to a club in need of both.

However, the uncertainty at Zamalek — coupled with their ongoing player recruitment efforts — means that the possibility of Mosimane taking the reins might only be revisited later in the off-season.

For now, the ball is in Zamalek’s court. Whether they stick to tradition or embrace a proven African winner like Mosimane could shape the club’s fortunes for the 2025/26 campaign and beyond.
