Teko Modise Hails Mamelodi Sundowns After Brave FIFA Club World Cup Campaign

Mamelodi Sundowns legend Teko Modise has shared his admiration for the team following their spirited performance at the inaugural expanded 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

Representing Africa alongside Al Ahly, Esperance, and Wydad Athletic Club, Sundowns left a strong impression on the global stage. While none of the African teams progressed beyond the group stage, the Brazilians earned widespread praise for their fearless playing style and tactical discipline.

Sundowns finished their Club World Cup run with one win, one draw, and one loss. Their performances against high-profile opposition demonstrated growth, quality, and the hunger to compete with some of the world’s best.

Reflecting on the campaign, Modise expressed pride in how the team represented both the club and the continent. Speaking on the Pitchside Podcast, the former Sundowns midfield maestro challenged the current players and technical team to build on this milestone.

“I would say the message is to the team, the technical staff, the management, and everyone that is involved with Mamelodi Sundowns that now the world, the international stage, knows who you are. Can you go to the second level?” Modise said.

He also directed words of encouragement to players who didn’t get much game time during the tournament. “For the players, those who didn’t play and didn’t participate, can you come back and actually participate and go further? I think that is the challenge I’m putting on the team and on the players.”

Modise highlighted the pride the team has instilled in its supporters. “We played our way, and we never panicked. We never showed any stress, and this is how we have to play going forward. I’m very, very proud to be here, and I hope this experience pushes the team to come back stronger next season.”

With their Club World Cup journey behind them, Sundowns players and technical staff are now on a short break before pre-season preparations begin. Coach Miguel Cardoso will be under pressure to translate this international exposure into success both domestically and in continental competitions during the 2025/26 campaign.

Fans will be eager to see how Sundowns build on this experience as they aim to remain dominant in the DStv Premiership and make deeper runs in both the CAF Champions League and future editions of the Club World Cup.
