Khanyisa Mayo Pens Emotional Tribute After SuperSport United Sale

Bafana Bafana and CR Belouizdad attacker Khanyisa Mayo has shared a heartfelt message in response to the recent sale of SuperSport United, the club where his professional journey truly began.

This week, broadcasting giant SuperSport International confirmed the sale of its Premier Soccer League (PSL) club, SuperSport United, to Siwelele Football Club (Pty) Ltd. The announcement marks the end of an era for the Tshwane-based outfit, affectionately known as ‘Matsatsantsa’, which has been a pillar of South African football development for decades.

“SuperSport International would like to confirm the sale of its Premier Soccer League (PSL) club, SuperSport United, to Siwelele Football Club (Pty) Ltd. following a closed bidding process,” read the official statement from SuperSport.

For Mayo, the sale is deeply personal. The 25-year-old attacker, who is the son of former Bafana Bafana stalwart Patrick Mayo, began his journey at SuperSport United’s academy in 2015 after being scouted from Chippa United. He remained with the club until 2018, before embarking on a professional career that saw him play for Royal Eagles, Richards Bay, Cape Town City, and most recently CR Belouizdad in Algeria.

Taking to Instagram, Mayo reflected on his time at SuperSport with gratitude and emotion.

“It pains me to see the club that I grew up in being ended like this,” he wrote. “I just want to thank the CEO, Mr Stanley Matthews, for believing in my talent and nurturing it. I spent 5 years at the club — to be where I am today is because of SuperSport United.”

He went on to acknowledge the coaches and staff who helped shape his career. “Coach Kwanele Kopo, Coach Ricardo Katza, Coach Godfrey, Coach Junior, and the technical staff — I’m forever grateful. The aunties who took care of everything, Bianca, the physios Bra B, Razo and Bra Collins. Even the drivers who had sleepless nights because of us at the academy.”

“To the fans of Skeema Matsatsantsa, you always have a special place in my heart. I’m proud to call myself a product of SuperSport United.”

Mayo is just one of many high-profile talents developed by the club. SuperSport United’s academy has been instrumental in producing top-tier players such as Ronwen Williams, Kermit Erasmus, and Teboho Mokoena — all of whom have gone on to represent Bafana Bafana and shine in the DStv Premiership and beyond.

The emotional tribute comes at a time of double disappointment for Mayo, with former club Cape Town City being relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship — a development that adds to the sense of loss surrounding the news.

As more information emerges about the new owners, Siwelele FC, reports indicate that the club will don the iconic green and white stripes long associated with Bloemfontein Celtic — suggesting a strong Celtic influence in the new venture.

While the sale signals the end of SuperSport United as fans have come to know it, players like Khanyisa Mayo are living proof of the legacy the club leaves behind — one built on development, opportunity, and excellence.
