Under-20 AFCON Star Kgomotso Modiba Begins Fluminense Training in Brazil

Rising South African footballer Kgomotso Modiba is taking a bold step in his development after being sent to Brazil to train with Fluminense’s U20 side. The 17-year-old midfielder, a key part of the Amajita squad that recently won the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is now being primed for greater heights through a rare and strategic international training initiative.
Modiba, who hails from the renowned Stars of Africa Academy, played a pivotal role in helping South Africa secure the Under-20 AFCON title in May. That triumph also sealed qualification for the upcoming FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile, which kicks off from September 27 to October 19.
Following a stint at FC Famalicão in Portugal, Modiba is now in Brazil gaining valuable experience with one of South America’s most respected youth setups. According to Stars of Africa executive Nadime Mahmoud, the decision to expose the teenager to international environments is part of a long-term vision.
“We are aiming high because we believe the boy is destined for the top,” said Mahmoud. “Since he is still not 18, he cannot sign for any team now but has been to FC Famalicão in Portugal to train.”
Mahmoud emphasized that the goal is to prepare Modiba for selection to the national team squad heading to the World Cup later this year, and to set the stage for potential moves once he turns 18 in January.
“We are preparing him in many ways—travelling, living in a different country, and eliminating the fear factor,” Mahmoud added. “He is now in Brazil to train at high intensity so he can understand the game at that level.”
The initiative reflects Stars of Africa’s broader philosophy of molding elite talent through immersive international exposure. Mahmoud also highlighted the challenges the academy faces, particularly in developing players without significant external backing.
“This is the work that we do behind the scenes to produce these players with little support, and you have clubs coming to steal our players,” he said.
Fluminense is a fitting destination for Modiba’s next stage. The Brazilian club has become familiar to South African audiences after facing Mamelodi Sundowns during their journey to the FIFA Club World Cup semi-finals.
As Modiba trains in the demanding Brazilian football environment, the experience is expected to sharpen his technical and physical capabilities—equipping him for the challenges of the World Cup and beyond.
