Zuko Mdunyelwa Linked with Loan Move as Sundowns Eye Squad Trim

Mamelodi Sundowns are expected to sanction several player exits during the current transfer window, and promising right-back Zuko Mdunyelwa is reportedly among those being considered for a loan move. With fierce competition for places in the reigning champions’ squad, Mdunyelwa could be set for a temporary switch to gain more game time.

Soccer Laduma reports that Sundowns are open to letting the 24-year-old defender leave on loan before the transfer window closes. Mdunyelwa, who joined Masandawana from Chippa United, has found opportunities limited at right-back—a position stacked with seasoned talent and depth.

While nothing has been finalized, Chippa United are believed to be monitoring the situation closely. The Eastern Cape-based side is reportedly keen on bringing Mdunyelwa back, and preliminary discussions are expected to take place soon. New Chippa head coach Sinethemba Badela is currently shaping his squad for the new campaign, and a reunion with the former Chilli Boys star could be on the cards.

Mdunyelwa made just seven appearances in all competitions last season for Sundowns. However, he made a notable impact during those rare outings, providing an assist for Jayden Adams in the club’s convincing 3-0 victory over SuperSport United. He was also part of the squad that travelled to the United States for the FIFA Club World Cup, reflecting the club’s belief in his potential despite limited minutes.

Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has already hinted at trimming the squad ahead of the 2024/25 season. With the club competing on multiple fronts but still aiming for efficiency and balance, players on the fringes are likely to be moved, whether on loan or permanently.

In addition to Mdunyelwa, players such as Thapelo Maseko and Kobamelo Kodisang are also being linked with exits as Sundowns prepare for a leaner but competitive squad. The club recently confirmed five player departures and more are expected before the window slams shut.

A loan move for Mdunyelwa could provide him with much-needed playing time to develop further while offering his temporary employers a solid option in defence. For now, all eyes remain on whether Chippa United or another Betway Premiership side will secure his services in the coming weeks.
