Matias Esquivel Headed for Mamelodi Sundowns Exit Amid Financial Hurdles

Mamelodi Sundowns’ squad overhaul ahead of the 2025/26 season is in full swing, with more exits expected as part of the club’s ongoing restructuring process. Among those set to depart is South American midfielder Matias Esquivel, whose future with the club has been under scrutiny for several months.
According to Siya crew sources, Esquivel is one of the players earmarked for release, though his departure has been delayed due to complex financial logistics tied to his contract. While other exits have proceeded smoothly, negotiations surrounding the Argentine midfielder’s situation have proved more intricate.
“He is one of the players who is supposed to be released by the club, but it’s believed that there are financial complications and logistics involved with him compared to the other players, and that’s why it’s taking a bit long. But his release is as good as done pending the agreement on those financial logistics,” a source close to the situation told the Siya crew.
Esquivel, who joined Sundowns in 2023, still has time remaining on his contract, which has complicated the club’s plans. There is now speculation that the club could pursue a loan deal instead of a full release to avoid paying a large settlement fee.
“The club is trying to figure out if it will be better to loan him out if they are to avoid paying a big amount to release him. That’s what they are working on,” the source added.
Since arriving in South Africa, Esquivel has struggled to make a meaningful impact at Chloorkop. He managed just 10 appearances in the Betway Premiership, contributing a single goal. The 25-year-old also spent the first half of last season back on loan at his former club Talleres Córdoba in Argentina, but his return to Sundowns failed to spark a breakthrough.
With Sundowns making room for new talent and working to streamline their squad, Esquivel’s departure appears imminent. Whether through a loan or contract termination, it’s clear that the club is ready to part ways with the midfielder as they continue reshaping their roster for the new campaign.
