Orlando Pirates Eye Historic Fourth Consecutive MTN8 Title as 2025 Edition Kicks Off

Orlando Pirates are set to begin their 2025 MTN8 campaign with their sights firmly set on rewriting history books. As the 18th edition of the tournament under the MTN sponsorship gets underway, the Buccaneers are aiming to become the first team to win the cup four years in a row.

This prestigious knockout competition holds special meaning for Pirates. They were the very first champions back in 1972 when the tournament was sponsored by BP. Decades later, they remain a dominant force, especially under the MTN banner since its introduction in 2008.

Led by Spanish tactician Jose Riveiro, Pirates have won the MTN8 in each of the last three seasons. Now, they stand on the verge of a historic milestone—one that would further cement their legacy as the most successful side in this era of the competition.

Their title defence begins with a quarterfinal clash against Polokwane City on August 2 at Orlando Stadium, kicking off at 15:00. It’s the first of four matches they’ll need to win to claim the crown once again.

The same day will see Sekhukhune United take on TS Galaxy at Peter Mokaba Stadium at 18:00. The action continues on Sunday, August 3, when Stellenbosch FC host AmaZulu at DHL Cape Town Stadium at 15:00. Later that evening, Mamelodi Sundowns face Richards Bay FC at Lucas Moripe Stadium, with kickoff set for 18:00.

With the stage now set, all eyes will be on Orlando Pirates as they chase an unprecedented fourth straight MTN8 triumph—a feat that would not only reflect their recent dominance but also honour their rich history in the tournament.
