Bafana Midfielder Luke Le Roux Opens Up on Dream Move to Portsmouth

South African international Luke Le Roux has shared his excitement and pride after completing a move to English Championship side Portsmouth from Swedish outfit IFK Värnamo.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who was officially unveiled as a Pompey player last week, is set to embark on a new chapter in his career at Fratton Park, and he couldn’t be more thrilled.

“I’m really happy and excited to be here,” Le Roux said in his first official interview with the club. “I’m grateful for the opportunity and can’t wait to get going.”

Born in Stellenbosch and having risen through the ranks at SuperSport United, Le Roux has long dreamed of playing in England — a dream now realized.

“As a young kid growing up in South Africa, you always want to play in England because these are the leagues you would watch. So when I heard about this opportunity, it was definitely something that I didn’t need to think twice about,” he explained.

Le Roux, who has already earned seven caps for Bafana Bafana, described the move as surreal, admitting that he still finds it hard to believe.

“It’s hard to put what it means into words and I still have to pinch myself because I’ve been working towards this throughout my career.”

A key moment in his decision to join Portsmouth was a meeting with the club’s sporting director and head coach, which helped him understand where he would fit into the team and the club’s ambitions going forward.

“I don’t think anyone could come out of that and not want to join Portsmouth,” he said. “I was told how I would fit into the team and what I would add. The project was sold to me, and it really excites me what this club wants to do, so I’m happy to make the next step.”

Looking back at his career highlights, Le Roux mentioned his debut for the South African national team as a standout moment — but acknowledged that this move is just as significant.

“Winning my first cap for the national team is probably the highlight of my career, but now there’s this move.”

As he prepares for life in one of English football’s most competitive leagues, Le Roux is eager to connect with the Portsmouth faithful.

“I heard the crowd here is amazing and so I can’t wait to meet all the fans, and I promise them that I will give my best every single day.”
