Benni McCarthy Secures First Win as Harambee Stars Kick Off CHAN Campaign with Vital Victory

Former Manchester United strikers coach Benni McCarthy marked an important milestone last weekend by securing his first win as Kenya’s national team head coach in the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN). The tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, has seen Harambee Stars navigate a challenging Group A that includes powerhouses Morocco, Zambia, DR Congo, and Angola.

Being the host nation comes with its own pressures, and Kenya faced a formidable opponent on Sunday in two-time CHAN champions DR Congo. The match took place at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani, where the stakes were high.

Despite the odds, McCarthy’s side delivered a hard-fought 1-0 victory, thanks to a crucial strike from Austin Odhiambo right before halftime. The win was Kenya’s first in the group stage and a significant boost in their continental campaign.

This win not only lifted the spirits of Harambee Stars but also brought tangible rewards. Each player earned approximately R141,000 for the victory, with draws rewarding half that amount. The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has promised escalating bonuses, including R8.5 million if the team reaches the quarter-finals and R10 million for making it to the semi-finals.

The incentives don’t stop there. Kenyan President William Ruto pledged a massive R85 million should the team win the tournament, while former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi added another R56 million. Combined, these promises total about R141 million in potential bonuses, fueling the team’s motivation to excel on home soil.

After this key victory, Kenya currently sits second in Group A, trailing Morocco who defeated Angola 2-0 at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday evening. The next crucial match for the Stars is set for Thursday, when they host Angola at Kasarani.

With momentum building and the support of the home crowd, McCarthy’s team will look to continue their positive run and advance deeper into the competition.

The CHAN tournament is a biennial competition featuring only players who compete in their national domestic leagues, making it a unique showcase for local talent. Kenya’s involvement as co-hosts adds excitement and expectations from fans across the country eager to see their stars shine on the continental stage.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Harambee Stars to see if they can capitalize on their early success and make a strong push toward lifting the coveted trophy on home soil.
