Sipho Chaine Reflects on Heroics as Orlando Pirates Edge Sundowns in MTN8 Semi-Final

Sipho Chaine has opened up about his experience during the penalty shootout that saw Orlando Pirates defeat Mamelodi Sundowns to reach the MTN8 final on Saturday. The semi-final ended 1-1 over both legs, with the first leg at Orlando Stadium producing a 1-1 draw and the return fixture at Lucas Moripe Stadium mirroring the scoreline.
The Soweto giants eventually prevailed 4-1 in the spot-kicks, with Chaine emerging as the hero by saving efforts from Teboho Mokoena and Marcelo Allende. Speaking to SuperSport TV, the 28-year-old goalkeeper described the high-pressure scenario.
“I tried to stay calm as much as possible,” Chaine said. “Although it’s a very high-pressure situation, I tried today. It was not easy and I am glad it went the right way for me.”
Chaine acknowledged the quality of Sundowns’ penalty takers. “We know playing Sundowns, the top, top kickers that they have, it’s no easy task saving these penalties, and I’m glad that we came out victorious. We tried to do as much homework as we could. He (Mokoena) is one of the best takers, but sometimes you go right and sometimes he goes left, so it’s very difficult in the moment. Like I said, I’m glad that it went well for me,” he added.
Pirates now face Stellenbosch FC in the MTN8 final, who reached the final after defeating Sekhukhune United 3-1 on aggregate. Before that showdown, the Soweto outfit will focus on their Betway Premiership fixture against Orbit College FC at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday at 19:30.
Chaine’s heroics in the shootout highlighted his composure and skill, reinforcing his status as a key figure for Pirates in crucial matches.
