Orlando Pirates Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou Provides Update on Relebohile Mofokeng

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has addressed concerns over Relebohile Mofokeng after the winger was unexpectedly omitted from the Buccaneers’ squad for their 1-0 league win over Orbit College FC at Orlando Stadium.
The Betway Premiership newcomers were edged out by a second-half goal from Lebone Seema, giving Pirates back-to-back league victories. However, the biggest talking point was Mofokeng’s absence, as the 20-year-old had featured in every match of the season prior to Tuesday night.
Mofokeng watched the game from the stands alongside several teammates after medical staff raised concerns about his readiness for the fixture. Speaking after the match, Ouaddou confirmed that the club is still seeking clarity on the issue.
“About Rele, I have to discuss with the medical department. They communicated that he cannot be part of the game. We still don’t have full feedback on the exam he should undergo. I hope it’s nothing serious because we need him,” Ouaddou said.
Mofokeng’s absence comes shortly after he played the full 90 minutes in Pirates’ dramatic penalty shootout victory over Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 semi-final second leg, which secured the Soweto giants a place in the final against Stellenbosch next month.
The young Bafana Bafana international has been central to Ouaddou’s plans this season, making six appearances across all competitions. His direct style of play and creativity have been crucial to Pirates’ resurgence following a rocky start, which included losses to Sekhukhune United and Marumo Gallants in the opening two league matches.
Mofokeng has also attracted international attention, with reports linking him to a potential move to Major League Soccer side Minnesota United.
For now, Pirates’ focus remains on his recovery. The club hopes to have him available as they aim for consistency in the league while preparing for the MTN8 final. Ouaddou stressed the importance of the young attacker’s fitness and urged patience as the medical department completes their assessment.
Supporters will be watching closely for updates to see when one of the Buccaneers’ most exciting talents can return to the field.
