Hugo Broos Praises Bafana Bafana’s Fighting Spirit After Draw Against Nigeria

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance after a hard-fought draw against Nigeria on Tuesday evening. The clash was intense and physical, with both sides pushing for control.

The host nation looked on course for victory when William Troost-Ekong’s own goal gave South Africa hope. However, Nigeria’s Calvin Bassey struck back, denying Bafana the chance to seal early qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite the setback, South Africa remains in a strong position. With the next round of qualifiers scheduled for October, a win over Zimbabwe will secure their place at the global tournament.

Broos, speaking to SABC Sport, praised his players for matching Nigeria’s physical approach. “It was a match like I expected, physical match much harder from the opponent. It’s only in the second half when they tried to win the game with power football, but we did a very good game also. We had the power in our team also, we fought for it. I said before the game we will try to win but if it’s a draw then I’m happy also and I’m happy.”

He highlighted the resilience his players showed. “If you can’t win with good football you have to do it with fighting and this is what they did. They fought in the second half for every ball, every metre. There were guys that were really dead but still they sprint. This is a group who wants to go to the World Cup and today was a crucial game. It was a draw, Nigeria stay on six points, it’s up to us now to win one game then we have qualified.”

Broos also noted that such physical contests prepare his team for the demands of international football. “Yes, because the previous games we did always with good football, today our football was less but there was a team on the pitch, a team that fought for every ball. It was very physical and I think it prepares the players a lot in the physical level of football. Three, four years ago, when we played this kind of match, we always lost it. Now today we were there on the pitch, we fought for it and you see what you can achieve.”

The result leaves Bafana Bafana in control of their qualification path. Victory against Zimbabwe in October would guarantee their ticket to the World Cup, marking another step forward under Broos’ leadership.
