Thembinkosi Lorch Strengthens Case for Bafana Return with Key Assist for Wydad

Thembinkosi Lorch continues to push for a recall to the Bafana Bafana squad after another impressive performance for Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club. The former Orlando Pirates star provided the decisive assist in Wydad’s 1–0 win over Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko this past weekend.
Halfway through the 2024/25 season, Lorch joined Wydad on loan while Rulani Mokwena was still in charge. He quickly made an impact, helping the club reach the CAF Confederation Cup, which sparked interest in making his move permanent. After protracted negotiations, Wydad secured Lorch’s transfer from Mamelodi Sundowns.
Despite achieving a high-profile move, Lorch has maintained focus and consistency. His contribution against Asante Kotoko came in the 46th minute when he delivered a precise corner kick that Congolese midfielder Joseph Bakasu converted, giving Wydad a crucial advantage heading into the second leg.
Lorch’s form this season has been impressive. According to Sofascore, he has contributed to four goals in five appearances across all competitions. He scored in a 1–1 league draw against Union Yacoub El-Mansour and both scored and assisted in Wydad’s 3–1 victory over COD Meknes, highlighting his continued influence on the team.
Belgian coach Hugo Broos, when asked about Lorch’s potential return to Bafana Bafana, noted that squad space is limited at the moment. However, should Lorch sustain his current level of performance in Casablanca, it is likely he will force his way back into Broos’s plans.
With his consistent displays and ability to influence crucial moments, Lorch is proving that he remains one of South Africa’s most effective attacking talents, keeping the door open for a national team recall.
