Mfundo Vilakazi’s World Cup Form Could Spark European Move

Mfundo Vilakazi’s standout performances at the under-20 FIFA World Cup could open doors for a move to Europe, according to his agent, Mike Makaab. The Kaizer Chiefs midfielder was one of Amajita’s key players as they reached the knockout stages, becoming the second generation of South African under-20 players to do so.

Playing in a number 10 role, Vilakazi was the team’s main creative outlet, orchestrating attacks and handling responsibility with composure. His displays drew attention from scouts and analysts, reinforcing his potential for growth beyond local football.

At club level, Vilakazi is still fighting for regular game time. At Chiefs, he is often used as a substitute, brought on to make an impact in matches rather than starting consistently. Makaab believes that turning his World Cup momentum into a starting role at club level is crucial for a future Bafana Bafana call-up.

“I just think it’s a catalyst for him to move to greater heights. Him and I have discussed it. It’s something that he’s got to look at from a positive viewpoint and say to himself, ‘I’ve done it at this level and now I’ve got to do it for my club and become a full international at Bafana Bafana level,’” Makaab told Soccer Laduma.

Makaab praised Vilakazi’s professionalism and mindset. “He is a sensible young man. He is serious about his life and career and a pleasure to work with. There is no doubt in my mind that opportunities will come. These things unfold naturally. It’s a step in the right direction. The time will come sooner than later where his next move will be a serious move. He is already at a serious football club, but I am talking about a European move.”

Vilakazi returned to Chiefs after the World Cup and was part of the squad that travelled for the CAF Confederation Cup clash against AS Simba from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is expected to feature when Amakhosi host Siwelele at FNB Stadium tonight, offering another chance to showcase his talent at club level.

Consistent performances at Chiefs could solidify Vilakazi’s pathway to a full international call-up and set the stage for a European transfer, taking his career to the next level.
