Themba Zwane’s AFCON Hopes Rely on Coach Loyalty

Themba Zwane’s inclusion in South Africa’s final squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations may hinge on one key factor: the loyalty of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos. A former Mamelodi Sundowns defender believes Zwane’s experience and past performances make him a strong candidate despite limited playing time since returning from injury.
Zwane is part of Broos’ preliminary squad for the tournament, even though he has not featured competitively since September. He suffered an injury in a match against Magesi FC and has yet to regain full match fitness. Broos’ decision to include him at this stage suggests faith in his ability to contribute once fit.
Former Sundowns defender Siyanda Zwane highlighted Broos’ loyalty as a major factor. He explained that the coach values players who have delivered for him previously, even if their current club form is inconsistent.
“Coach Hugo Broos is big on loyalty. Once you have played well for him, he does not forget you. Some players who were not playing regularly at their clubs still came in and performed at the national level,” Siyanda Zwane said.
He added that Themba Zwane brings more than just experience. “Many will argue that Themba is ageing or has had injuries, but he offers football intelligence, leadership, and inspiration to younger players. His presence alone adds an aura to the team. If he gets minutes at Sundowns before AFCON, he can help either as a starter or an impact player. He still has a lot to offer.”
Zwane’s potential inclusion also strengthens options in the number 10 role. Siyanda Zwane pointed out that beyond Sipho Mbule, there are few alternatives in that position. “Mbule is more of an eight than a ten. We need someone like Themba Zwane. When he is on the pitch, you know something good is going to happen.”
The combination of experience, leadership, and positional versatility makes Zwane a valuable asset for Bafana Bafana. Broos’ loyalty and belief in past performers may ultimately secure him a spot in the final squad for Morocco.
