Kaizer Chiefs Captain Brandon Petersen Confident Ahead of Zamalek Clash

Kaizer Chiefs captain Brandon Petersen insists his team could have won their opening CAF Confederation Cup group stage match against Al Masry in Egypt and is optimistic about securing vital points at home against Zamalek on Saturday.
Speaking in Polokwane ahead of the encounter at Peter Mokaba Stadium, Petersen stressed the importance of learning from the 2-1 defeat while capitalizing on home advantage and fan support.
“We know it’s going to be a big one. Obviously, we didn’t get the start we wanted in Egypt, but we’re looking to redeem ourselves. Having our supporters behind us at home gives us an edge. We learnt our lessons in Egypt and the boys are ready for this game,” Petersen said.
The 31-year-old goalkeeper reflected on the challenges of playing away in continental competitions, acknowledging the difficulty of facing teams in their home environment. “People may think it wasn’t too difficult, but playing at their ground is always harder. They have supporters behind them and their own ways of playing, which you have to adapt to,” he explained.
Despite the defeat, Petersen believes Chiefs created enough chances to have earned a positive result. “For me, the game in Egypt was one we could have won. We had opportunities that we didn’t capitalise on, and that could have changed the outcome,” he added.
Looking ahead to Zamalek, Petersen acknowledged the quality and physicality of the Egyptian side but expressed confidence in Chiefs’ ability to compete. “Zamalek is a strong, competitive team, but we need to stick to what we do best. It should be a good test for us and an exciting game of football,” he said.
Petersen emphasized the importance of collecting maximum points at home, noting that early victories are key to easing qualification calculations later in the tournament. “We want the three points at home. Early in the competition, you want to secure points so later you don’t have to make complicated calculations. The team knows how important this is,” he said.
He also called on supporters to create a hostile atmosphere for the visiting Egyptian side. “We love our supporters and appreciate them. We want them to come out in numbers, rally behind us, and make it a great day for football in South Africa,” Petersen concluded.
Saturday’s match kicks off at 15:00 at Peter Mokaba Stadium, with Chiefs needing points to keep their quarterfinal hopes alive in the CAF Confederation Cup.
