Fawaaz Basadien Opens Up on Tough Start at Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Fawaaz Basadien has spoken candidly about his challenging start at the Tshwane giants following his high-profile move from Stellenbosch FC at the start of the 2025/26 season. The 29-year-old left back arrived at Sundowns in the July transfer window with high expectations, having impressed at Stellenbosch FC and once being tipped as a potential starter for Bafana Bafana. Fans and pundits expected Basadien to make an immediate impact, but his transition has been slower than anticipated.

Since joining Sundowns, Basadien has made only a handful of appearances and was not included in South Africa’s squad for the recent AFCON in Morocco. Speaking to the club’s media, he acknowledged the challenges of adapting to a new environment but expressed confidence in earning a regular spot.

“Of course, adapting to a new setup and earning your place in a team of such quality takes time,” Basadien said. “However, I understand and respect that I must fight for my place, as we have some exceptional defenders. That motivates me to work harder every day. I am also fully aware of the responsibility that comes with the badge.”

Basadien highlighted his ambition to contribute consistently to the team. “I feel confident that my skills and experience can add value to what Sundowns want to achieve on the pitch. I want to bring consistency, energy and leadership every time I step onto the field and help the team maintain our high standards.”

Competition for the left back position is intense, with Basadien facing challenges from main starter Aubrey Modiba, as well as Lunga Divine and Asekho Tiwani. Despite the pressure, he remains determined to stake his claim and adapt to Sundowns’ demanding style of play.

Sundowns returned to competitive action on January 20 with a clash against Orbit College at Loftus Versfeld, offering Basadien an opportunity to gain more minutes and make an impression as the season progresses. Basadien’s honesty and focus highlight his professionalism and determination to overcome a slow start, proving his value to one of South Africa’s strongest clubs.
